On Land, Water, Concrete

In today’s world, it is difficult to find nature untouched by human activity. And if we can find this, it is often in protected zones, in national parks. Or in remote deserts with extreme temperatures.

This series of landscapes is a work in progress. It looks at altered landscapes. Sites often found in and or around big cities. It is where bodies of water meet cement and chain link fences. Where a bridge was built over a river to accommodate a highway. Places where staircases were constructed. To enable pedestrians to climb uphill, or to reach the heavens in order to display power and dominance. Staircases to descend into the earth itself as is the case with the underground metro. Underground canals, pyramids and ancient gates to walled ancient cities. Contrasted by deserts with harsh temperatures where a few hours without water, one would face certain death. The running thread in this work is how human labor has altered the landscape in dramatic ways, creating a new hybrid landscape where savage nature and cement meet. Whether ancient ruins, or ruins of modern industrialization. The link is human labor and its effects on the land.
